Homework
Eastwood changed it's policy about homework. Looking at the research around elementary school homework, studies show there is no evidence to demonstrate that homework benefits children younger than high school age. Being a mom of two boys I understand the importance of family dinners, after school activities, and quality time spent together.
Although, I highly encourage you to read to your child each night. It is recommended to read 20 minutes a day together. Although it is not considered homework it is so beneficial for a student’s academic growth. Ask a variety of questions as you read. Who is the story about? What lesson did the character learn? Or using this time as a chance for students to point out and read the sight words in the story.
I will also be sending home any work that has not been completed throughout the day or if your child is absent. Most of our learning is done through investigation and discussion so this will be limited. I will be sending home fun family activities as well as notecards (for those that request them) to make sight word flashcards. These sight words are listed on our monthly newsletter. These will not be graded or need to be returned. It will just be a chance to spend time together and practice.
